FP&A Analyst CV Template

FP&A (Financial Planning & Analysis) is finance that looks forward, not backward. Not the accounting team closing last month, but the analysts answering 'what does Q3 look like if we hire 8 more engineers and open a new market'. In SaaS, FP&A became one of the most critical seats after 2024, with every dollar of investor money under fresh scrutiny.

5 questions FP&A Analyst candidates hear

  1. Q1Walk me through a model you built from scratch. What assumptions did you make, how did you validate them, what changed after your first review with the CFO?
  2. Q2How do you project cash runway when both hiring plan and revenue are uncertain?
  3. Q3You found a 12% gap between forecast and actual. How do you approach root cause?
  4. Q4How do you handle a sales VP pushing for a bigger budget when the math says no?
  5. Q5When you inherit a model from a previous analyst, where do you start the audit?
FAQ

Common questions about this CV

How do I get into FP&A without a finance background?

Shortest path: CFA Level 1 or CPA, plus 2-3 years in consulting or audit, then move into corporate FP&A. Without a strict finance background, the bridge usually comes via Senior Data Analyst at a SaaS company, where SaaS analytics rolls naturally into an FP&A move.

CFA or MBA, which one?

CFA goes deep on finance and is valued in IB and buy-side. MBA goes wide on network and is valued in corporate FP&A and for VP Finance moves. For an FP&A career, a top-program MBA opens more doors, CFA deepens the technical bench. If forced to pick one: MBA.

Do I need SQL in FP&A?

In 2026, yes, mandatory. Without SQL you wait a week on the data team for numbers you could pull yourself in 10 minutes. Basic level (SELECT, JOIN, GROUP BY, basic window functions) is enough.

How do I show impact on a CV when the work is mostly Excel models?

Translate models into the business decisions they supported. 'Built a cash-flow model' is weak. 'Cash-flow model surfaced a 4-month runway gap, CFO shifted hiring by 2 quarters and the company avoided going cash-negative' is strong.
