Overview: We are looking for a hands-on Senior Engineer with expertise in Java, TypeScript, and basic Operations to lead and manage our existing Ukrainian engineering team (which is currently 1 Middle Java Engineer and 1 Middle JavaScript Engineer).
The team you would be joining is small, agile, and highly collaborative. The current engineering team includes engineers in the US and Ukraine. In addition to hands-on software development, you will provide technical leadership and guidance to a team of two engineers based in Ukraine, helping ensure clear priorities, expectations, and communication across the distributed team.
The primary focus of this role is to develop custom software solutions to implement and improve workflows for state and local governments. Previously, these workflows were manual or partially electronic solutions. The solutions you develop will have an immediate impact on end-user efficiency and help reduce time and cost.
Daily Responsibilities:
Team Management: Lead daily standups, run 1:1s, unblock developers, and mentor the local UA engineering team, help translate project priorities and expectations into clear technical tasks and direction for the team.
Development & Code Quality: Write clean code, perform code reviews, and drive architecture across Java backends and JavaScript/TypeScript systems.
Ops & Reliability: Oversee daily deployment pipelines, monitor application health, handle incident management, and keep production systems stable.
Communication: Bridge daily syncs between the Ukrainian engineering team and global tech leadership in clear English.
Desired Experience and Skills:
Java: 5+ years of backend development experience (Spring Boot, Microservices, REST APIs, GraphQL, relational databases).
TypeScript: 4+ years of experience with TypeScript / JavaScript across frontend or full-stack environments. React experience.
Ops: 1+ year of Ops / DevOps experience (CI/CD pipelines, Docker, cloud basics, monitoring tools).
Leadership: 1+ year in a team lead, tech lead, or engineering manager role.
AI: familiarity with AI tooling and readiness to use AI extensively.
Languages: Native/fluent Ukrainian and professional English (verbal and written).
