CQUELLE is a boutique software company: eleven engineers, most of them senior, distributed across Hamburg, Ukraine, Poland, and Romania. Founded in 2019, run by a founder who has written software since 2005 and still codes most days. We build and rescue platforms for EdTech, HealthTech, and FinTech clients in Europe and the US — regulated industries, GDPR by default. Most new work arrives by referral, often from clients burned by a previous vendor.
We are hiring one full-stack developer to own workstreams on client platforms end-to-end: backend, frontend, tests, deployment, and the conversation with the client.
What you will work on
ASP.NET Core services (.NET 8–10), EF Core, PostgreSQL — clean architecture, multi-tenant, audit-trailed systems.
React 19 + TypeScript (strict) frontends: Next.js App Router on newer projects, MUI-era SPAs on maintained ones.
AWS (ECS, RDS, CloudFront), Docker, Kubernetes dev environments, CI on GitHub Actions and GitLab.
Both greenfield builds and vendor takeovers — rebuilding live systems in slices, without a rewrite.
AI-assisted development daily, governed by a written internal policy (Claude Code under a business agreement; never personal or production data through AI tools). You own the output; the review bar is the same as for hand-written code.
How we work
Done means: acceptance criteria fulfilled and tested, test scenarios written down, nothing else broke, and the result is genuinely convenient to use. Testing is never quietly cut — scope is renegotiated instead.
Stories are at most 20 hours, sub-tasks at most 2. Running more than ~20% past estimate is a signal to re-split, not to sink alone.
One board, one truth. Nobody supervises you or walks the team asking “what’s the real status?” — the status you set on the board is what the team, the founder, and the client act on. Keeping it honest, current, and yours is not admin work; it is the job. A board kept green for appearances breaks the whole model.
One active story per person. Being blocked is a state to exit immediately, not at tomorrow’s standup — and having nothing to do counts as blocked.
Developers talk to clients directly: proactive status, opinions before decisions, bad news reported by us first.
Blameless: we ask what let a mistake happen, not who.
What we expect
4+ years of production experience with .NET and ASP.NET Core; solid EF Core and SQL (PostgreSQL preferred).
2+ years of React with TypeScript in real products.
Tests as part of the definition of done: xUnit on the backend, Vitest/React Testing Library on the frontend.
Comfortable with Docker, CI pipelines, and cloud deployment (AWS is our default).
Fluent English — you will write to and speak with clients. Working hours with solid overlap in CET/EET.
This is probably not for you if
You want a large organization with a formal career ladder — we are eleven people and stay small by choice.
You prefer tickets handed to you fully specified, with someone else talking to the client.
You see tests and written task breakdowns as overhead rather than the job.
You are used to close control — a manager who assigns work, checks in daily, and treats the board as reporting theater. Here nobody polices you. We trust the status you write, plan around it, and tell the client based on it. If that freedom reads as “nobody will notice,” this will go badly for both of us; if it reads as “finally,” apply.
Practicalities
Fully remote, contract through CQUELLE GmbH (Hamburg) under EU law. Compensation discussed directly with the founder in the first call. Apply with a short note and something you built.
